Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
dir. Chris Columbus.
Then Neville nearly walked into him. He was one half of a pair that was carrying a body in from the grounds. Harry glanced down and felt another dull blow to his stomach: Colin Creevey, though underage, must have sneaked back just as Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle had done.
He was tiny in death.
Hi, Harry!
alright listen. i know we all have our favorite harry potter characters. we all have characters we think know deserved better.
but 2 characters that really did deserve better are cedric diggory and colin creevey. let’s talk about these 2 for a second.
cedric diggory. a lot of people do agree on this one, of course. he was one of the most known hufflepuffs in the series. in harry’s third year, hufflepuff and gryffindor played an iconic quidditch match. and things went wrong on harrys end, and hufflepuff won. do you remember what cedric did? he asked for a rematch. no other player in the whole series would have cared enough to do that. but he wanted to win fairly. he really did want a rematch. he didnt want that win due to the circumstances. and even though he wanted that rematch, but was denied, the gryffindors started to “hate” him. all through gof, gryffindors talked bad about him.
he also, like i said, was one of the most known hufflepuff characters. he entered into the goblet of fire and was chosen. he thought he’d be the only hogwarts champion. he definitely didnt think he’d be overshadowed by the boy who lived. but he was, and he didnt even really care. the other hufflepuffs cared, they wanted their house to finally get some well deserved recognition. harry gave cedric a tip, and cedric, being the fair and noble hufflepuff sweetheart that he was, returned the favor. he didnt have to. he chose to. to be fair. he always wanted to be fair.
now at the end of the tournament, when they were in the maze; he told harry to go. he told him to take the cup, to win. he knew it was only fair that harry wins because he saved him. he could have ran forward and claimed it himself. but it wouldnt have been the right thing to do. and he knew that. so they took it together instead.
cedric diggory died at 17 years old. a young boy. not even out of school yet. and his last wish was for his body to be returned to his family.
now onto colin creevey. a lot of people ignore his death and dont talk about him. but i think we should discuss him more. so lets get into what may possibly be one of the saddest deaths in the series.
colin was a year younger than harry. his first year, he made a rather annoying impression on harry (and probably all of us.) the little “fanboy” who loved taking pictures of every little thing. but he was so much more than that.
he was an older brother. in his third year, his younger brother joined him at school. and colin was so proud. he went to harry and immediately started talking about his his brother was coming to hogwarts too. he was proud and he loved his little brother.
he was also a muggleborn. completely new to the wizarding world. can you blame him for being so excited? for wanting to take as many photos as possible of the boy who lived; the boy who conquered voldemort? voldemort hated colin’s kind. he hated muggleborns. without lily’s love protecting harry, without harry being who he was, colin and his brother would have never known who and what they were. and knowing voldemort, he could have even tracked down muggleborns and hurt them. so of course colin was excited to meet and be in the same vicinity as harry! how can we blame him? and honestly wouldnt we all be excited?
now let’s move onto what would have been colin’s sixth year of school. dumbledore was dead, snape was headmaster, and voldemort was gaining control. colin and his brother had no school to go to. they most likely werent even safe in their own home. imagine the terror both of the creevey boys must have felt. now, i dont know how many of you are older siblings, but if youre ever in a scary situation with your little brothers/sisters, youre not going to want to show your fear. your goal is to act strong for them. i imagine colin would have done anything he could to assure dennis that everything would be okay. that they would be okay. even though he knew how bad things could get. if voldemort had won this war, he knew what could have happened to every muggleborn alive.
now harry returns to the school to look for ravenclaws horcrux. and the call to the order is made. its time to fight. this is it. this is the moment everyone knew was coming. it was here. now you have this 16 year old kid, underage, who goes to the school to fight for the order. a child who is told multiple times to go home and stay safe. he knew what could have happened. but what did he do? he snuck back in and fought anyway. he knew that fighting this war and winning was the only chance him, his brother, and every other muggleborn would have to live a safer life in this world. he fought for them. this 16 year old child snuck back in to fight in an adult war that he didnt have to be a part of. he did it because it was right. and he died fighting. he died a hero.
“he was tiny in death” he was so tiny, in fact, that oliver wood could carry his lifeless body on his own. he told neville to go help someone else, because he himself could carry the dead body of this 16 year old kid.
colin creevey and cedric diggory deserved better.
You know what. Out of all the Harry Potter character I don’t believe that any of them are as underrated as Colin Creevey.
He was a muggle born, just like Hermione.
He also was petrified in his first year.
He had a brother, who he looked out for.
He looked up to Harry eventhough Harry wasn’t exactly the nicest.
He joined the DA, along with his brother.
And he stayed behind to fight in the Battle of Hogwart. Even though he was under age, he wanted to be a hero.
And he died fighting.
children of war,
just puppy soldiers.
they’re just little boys with grown-up toys,
playing w a r that’s all too r e a l .
